The ZooParc de Beauval will soon be the setting of a national event: the arrival of a couple of giant pandas! The arrival of these animals, that are the symbol of conservation, is being discussed at the highest level of state… between Presidents!
Delayed by the Greek crisis
At the sidelines of the G20 summit, it was planned that the Chinese President would give his final agreement to the French President for the arrival of pandas at Beauval. Yet, this has been delayed! The crisis in Greece understandably monopolized the discussions between the presidents… who therefore did not have time to speak about the pandas and the final agreement could therefore not be given.
Pandas, being ‘Chinese national treasures’, and symbols of peace and friendship between countries, can only arrive in a foreign country under the expressed wishes of the highest authorities of the state. This means that an agreement can only be made between the presidents of France and China, Nicolas Sarkozy and Hu Jintao…
Our two pandas are due to arrive as part of an ambitious program of reproduction, conservation and research (in the pandas’ natural environment), carried out in cooperation with the Chengdu panda base in China.
On Sunday, November 6th, our Minister for Ecology, Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, paid a visit along with the management of the ZooParc de Beauval to the Chengdu Panda Reproduction Center, China. During this visit, the Minister reconfirmed her interest in this great project and her hopes for a quick result.
We are; of course, ready at Beauval to welcome the pandas is style. The new Chinese zone at Beauval Zoo has been built, and their magnificent enclosure awaits them!
We will update you soon with more of the latest news on the pandas. More to follow…!
